Workers and Non-Worker Students

At UBC, a worker includes: senior executives, faculty, staff, student workers, and visitors who have been issued an employee number.

Required Courses for All Spaces

The following modules are required for all Mechanical Engineering spaces:

  1. SRS Module 1: New Worker Safety Orientation
  2. SRS Module 2: Preventing and Addressing Workplace Bullying & Harassment
  3. SRS Module 3: Workplace Violence Prevention
  4. SRS Module 4: One of:
    1. Chemical Safety (for faculty, staff, visiting researchers, and graduate students who work with chemicals)
    2. Introduction to Laboratory Safety (for undergraduate students who will work under constant direct supervision of a senior lab member)
    3. Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems (WHMIS) (for those who do not fall into the above categories, including office workers)
  5. UBC Requirement: Privacy Matters Fundamentals Part 1
  6. UBC Requirement: Privacy Matters Fundamentals Part 2
  7. UBC Requirement: Preventing and Responding to Sexual Misconduct
  8. A Site-Specific Orientation Record for each space you are requesting access to, including office spaces. This training should be conducted by your supervisor or a designated trainer for the space. Please note that only handwritten submissions will be accepted. Please scan your document and upload it as a PDF, not as a photo.

Please discuss with your supervisor if your space is higher risk, and requires any of the additional modules below.

Additional Training for PIs and Managers

You need to take the following courses if your role includes any duties as a supervisor:

  1. Safety Supervision at UBC
  2. Supporting Mental Health in the Workplace for Managers and Supervisors.

Additional Training for Higher-Risk Spaces

Depending on where you are working, higher-risk spaces may have additional safety requirements, including but not limited to the following:
