Services and Rates

To submit a request for any of the Electronics Shop services below, please email eshop@mech.ubc.ca or visit us in room 1220 of the Kaiser Building (main floor, south wing).

Rate Types

Electronics Shop services are available for UBCV Mechanical Engineering department researchers, students, faculty and staff, as well as other UBC units as our capacity allows. Our rates vary based off whether the request is internal or external to the department:

  • Internal: faculty, students, and staff of UBC Mechanical Engineering receive subsidized rates, in support of the department’s teaching and research mission.
  • External: rates for UBC units outside of Mechanical Engineering reflect full cost recovery for our services.

Please Note: we do not perform work for non-UBC purposes (i.e. private individuals or commercial enterprises).

Our Services

Design & Design Review

  • Internal Rates: design and review rates within the department are on a flat-rate tiered system, on a partial cost recovery basis:
    • Up to 1 hour: $38
    • Between 1 hour and 3 hours: $50
    • Between 3 hours and 10 hours: $100
    • Over 10 hours: $200
  • External Rates: $120/hour

Prototype Build Services

Prototype services will be quoted in advance, based on the project design or design review. Labour charges will not exceed quote.

  • Internal Rates: $38/hour plus parts and materials
  • External Rates: $120/hour plus parts and materials

Equipment Loans

UBC Mechanical Engineering faculty and students may borrow equipment up to a maximum loan period, to ensure equipment is available for everyone. Please enquire with eshop@mech.ubc.ca for details.

Components

Shop staff can help you select appropriate components for your project. We maintain a small stock of commonly used components but please note the following:

  • We have limited stock on hand – please order larger quantities through ECE stores.
  • Components are priced individually. Please note that we do not provide cash sales; purchases are billed to through Workday using UBC worktags.
    • If you are an undergraduate student working on a class project (such as 45X), please ask your instructor to see if a worktag is available for course-related components (this varies according to course).
