Regular Stock Items
The machine shop stocks some mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium sheets, plates and profiles. Sheet stock ranges from 24 gauge to 1″ plates and includes 1018 steel, 304 stainless steel (limited), 5052-H32 aluminium and 6061-T6 aluminium.
Round stock includes various diameters from 3/16″ up to 5″ for 1018 (hot rolled), 304 stainless and 6061-T6 aluminium.
Miscellaneous other materials and profiles are also available, but due to space constraints and the local availability of reasonably priced small quantities of metals, we do not have a wide selection.
Please come to the shop during shop open hours to browse the available stock if you want to see what we have.
If we don’t have what you need, you can order materials through ECE purchasing or you can also order your own material directly and have it shipped to ECE Receiving (Room 112b MacLeod Building, 2356 Main Mall, Vancouver, B. C. V6T 1Z4; please email firstname.lastname@example.org to generate a request ticket so that receiver can accept your order from the shipper). Metal Supermarket in Richmond provides free delivery on Wednesdays; McMaster Carr provides ~2 day delivery at reasonable rates and has a very wide variety of materials in small amounts – note that shipping of large/heavy items can be expensive and shipments have to cross the Canada/US border.
All material from the shop’s stock must be purchased using a UBC speed chart account code. Contact your supervisor/instructor for your particular account details.
Generally, you need to ask shop staff for access to materials and are expected to cut your own stock and report usage. Report length, width and thickness for rectangular shapes and weight for all other shapes.
